The Idea of North: award-winning a cappella group joining with Perth schools in massing sing-along

Staff WriterSouthern Gazette

PENRHOS College will join voices with an ARIA-winning a cappella quartet later this month and they are inviting the whole Perth community to get involved and sing in harmony.

Founded in Canberra in 1993, The Idea of North, who boasts 12 albums, will head west the week of May 22 to participate in two main events: The Idea of North – Four Distinct Voices, One Unique Group, and Community Big Sing.

The visit is part of the college’s annual Visiting Artists Program, designed to provide students with the opportunity to collaborate with outstanding musicians, and extend themselves musically.

The Idea of North members Jo Lawry, Naomi Crellin, Nick Begbie and Luke Thompson are hoping to pass on their knowledge, inviting the community to join them on May 24 at the Community Big Sing.

Penrhos College Dean of co-curricular and former director of music Paul McCarthy said being able to sing in a non-threatening environment with outstanding and personable musicians was a real treat.

“The Community Big Sing initiative is aimed at anyone in Perth, regardless of age. We have so many church and community choirs in Perth, not to mention all of us who sing in the shower,” he said.

“The idea is to bring all of these people together for a social night of singing with The Idea of North, and hopefully provide some inspiration and skill development, in a fun and social environment.”

Over the week, The Idea of North will also work with Penrhos, Aquinas and Wesley College choristers on vocal techniques.

On May 26, it will all come together when students take to the Rixon Theatre stage at Penrhos College for The Idea of North – Four Distinct Voices, One Unique Group concert.

The chorale students will perform individually and collectively with The Idea of North and then the internationally renowned musicians will put on a one-hour performance on their own.
