WACA Premier Cricket: brilliant Towers ton gets Melville over the line against Perth

Aaron CorlettSouthern Gazette

A BRILLIANT century by Melville captain and former Western Warrior Luke Towers saw his side across the line against Perth at Fletcher Park on Saturday.

After being sent in to bat, Perth began well and an 87-run stand between Jake Van Galen (57) and Dain Moreton had them well placed.

Moreton went on to register his first Premier Cricket century and his 105 included eleven boundaries and a six.

The final total of 245 set a good challenge, but not insurmountable.

Two early wickets to Josh Nicholas put Melville on the back foot, but Towers’ 128 not out was a classy knock.

He had good support from former Test player Adam Voges (55).

On Sunday, the Premier T20 competition commenced but Perth’s batsmen could not set Scarborough a sizeable target to defend.

The Colts, led by Liam Guthrie (48 from 24 balls) and an excellent all-round bowling effort defeated Scarborough.

Perth takes on Gosnells next Saturday at Fletcher Park in another One Day fixture.
