NBL1 West: Mandurah Magic men lose basketball heartbreaker to Geraldton Buccaneers

Matt ZisMandurah Times

Mandurah Magic’s revitalised men’s team has lost another heartbreaker at home, this time a final-second thriller to the defending NBL1 West champions.

The Magic were in front of Geraldton Buccaneers by a point with less than two seconds to play but Joel Murray was called for a foul as he desperately tried to block Josh Keyes’ buzzer-beating three-pointer.

That sent the Geraldton import to the free-throw line and he coolly made the first two to give his team back the lead 104-103, before deliberately missing the third so time would expire on the game.

It marked the second straight narrow defeat at home for the Magic following their overtime loss to Rockingham a week ago.

And again, an act of brilliance in the dying moments made it seem Mandurah had done enough only to give up the lead on the final possession.

Geraldton led by four entering the final minute but a slicing drive by Murray, who led his team with 24 points, cut the deficit in half.

Lachlan Bertram then put his team in front when he pulled the trigger from the corner for a sweet three-pointer with only eight seconds to play.

But the Buccs got the foul call on their next — and final — possession of the game to ultimately sink the Magic.

The Game AFL 2024

Jarrod Molnar (23 points), Julian Pesava (18 points) and giant American Michael Durr (19 points) played the bulk of the game and provided of Mandurah’s offence alongside key import Murray.

Buccs star Johnny Narkle (32 points) and favourite son Liam Hunt (22 points, 10 rebounds) led the visitors.

Sunday afternoon’s loss meant a split weekend for Mandurah after a blazing start fired them to a comfortable win over Lakeside Lightning on Friday night.

Mandurah were never headed in that game, winning 105-81 on the back of a 32-11 opening quarter.

Murray had 31 points, seven rebounds and six assists as all five starters recorded double-figure scores.

With two more tough games again this weekend, the Magic (two wins, three losses) have endured the busiest start to the season of all 14 clubs.

They host Cockburn Friday night at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre before travelling to the other end of the freeway on Saturday to battle the league-leading and undefeated Joondalup Wolves.
