EIGHT of Trigg Island Surf Life Saving Club’s best athletes have been selected to represent WA at the Interstate Championships in Queensland on January 20.

Club captain and vice president Dan Humble has been picked as the Western Suns State Team captain, while Devon Caren returns to the team.

Youngsters Maddie Thompson, Lachlan Mills, Olivia Schou, Patrick Eley, Hannah Greenfield and Callan Smith join Humble and Caren on the WA team for the first time.

Humble (33) said the Trigg Island members were in good condition and well prepared for the challenge.

“I think it is really a matter of being business as usual for the athletes selected because they do a lot of work to get selected in the first place,” he said.

“I guess the positive side for Trigg Island is that seven of the eight are 18 years or under; that is really good for future teams that progress through Trigg Island and state (level).”

Humble, who has been a lifesaver for 27 years, said the WA team would be competing against experienced teams.

“There are some really prominent athletes amongst the teams who have won Australian and world championships, so big results are definitely on the cards,” he said.

“But I think for a lot of the junior members, it is more about the experience and exposure and working towards a positive future.”

He said it was rewarding for himself to mentor young kids and race against the best of the world at the championships.

WA will compete at the Interstate Championships at Alexandra Headlands SLSC Queensland, while the development team will travel and compete on the same weekend at the Murphy Builders Carnival.
