THE SWAN Valley Wine Show will celebrate its 29th anniversary this month showcasing some of the premier wines in the region.

The wine show, which was first held at Lamonts Winery in 1989, started with 63 entries and has grown since, with 275 wines entered this year.

Swan Valley Wine Show committee member and winemaker at Pinelli Estate Wines Daniel Pinelli said he was looking forward to another excellent year for Swan Valley wine and celebrating 10 years on the committee.

He said the show was recognised as one of the premier regional wine shows in WA and was valuable to local producers.

“Being a regional wine show and judged by independent judges from overseas, interstate and locally, the wine show provides an opportunity for producers whether small or large to have their wine judged blind against similar wines from other producers in the region,” he said.

“Following the judging, exhibitor tastings allow winemakers to taste wines from other producers and discuss their wines with the judges, this gives immediate and valuable feedback to winemakers to help them improve their winemaking skills and provides insight into new varieties and styles being produced in the region”

International judge and co-founder of Dragon Phoenix Wine Consulting in Beijing Fongyee Walker will join the panel of wine experts Mark Warren, Ray Jordan, Severine Logan, Garth Cliff, Cath Oates and associate judges Dan Charter and Emma Farrelly.

Mr Pinelli said he expected this year’s shows heroes to be dry and young white wines.

“One of our strengths of the Swan Valley is that it can consistently produce exceptional wines of differing style from year to year, so we are again expecting to see some outstanding dry, young white wines particularly Verdelho and Chenin Blanc,” he said.

“Shiraz tends to dominate the entries in the red classes and judging always identifies some award winning wines often grown from old vines from the Swan Valley.”

The Swan Valley Wine Show judging will take place on August 23, followed by exhibitor tasting at Caversham House on August 24 and a Gala Awards Dinner at Mandoon Estate on August 25.
