ELLENBROOK has been named one of the best planned suburbs in Australia after taking out two awards at the 2017 Urban Development Institute Australia Awards for Excellence.

Ellenbrook was up against four other WA entrants to take home the Master Planned Development Award, as well as the Russel Perry Award for Urban Development Excellence.

Ellenbrook was named as the world’s best master planned community in 2015 by the International Real Estate Federation.

Housing Minister Peter Tinley said Ellenbrook was already Australia’s most awarded urban development project, with more than 40 wins under its belt.

“A primary objective of the Ellenbrook development is boosting the creation of local jobs and reducing the need for residents to commute long distances to work,” he said

“About 5600 jobs have been generated since Ellenbrook was launched and there is strong potential for this figure to rise to 8000 once construction is complete.”

Swan Hills MLA Jessica Shaw said the awards were great for Ellenbrook.

“These latest UDIA awards are a great result for Ellenbrook and highlight the benefits that are flowing and will continue to flow from this development,” she said.

Ms Shaw touched on former Swan Hills MLA Jay Radisich, who died from cancer in March 2012.

“My Labor predecessor Jaye Radisich, who was the youngest woman ever elected to the WA Parliament, was a strong and vocal supporter of Ellenbrook and I am privileged to continue that work,” she said.

“Ellenbrook is a flourishing development that demonstrates how government can partner with the private sector to successfully integrate social and affordable housing into vibrant, active and diverse communities.”
