Lisa ThomasThe Advocate

ELLENBROOK Secondary College are doing their bit for the environment with a group of student Eco Warriors volunteering their time to make a difference.

Eco Warriors was set up earlier this year by teachers Claire Potter and Geri Adams to encourage students to volunteer their time and make the school more sustainable.

The group meets on Thursdays after school, work on their current projects and discuss ways they can make a difference.

Ms Potter said since starting the program the school had grown its own vegetable garden, worm farm and had recycling initiatives in place to reduce what it was putting into landfill and to be more sustainable. Messages and tips on how to be more environmentally friendly and sustainable were put up around the school to encourage students, teachers and parents to change their habits at home.

“We started this because we are passionate about the environment and thought it would be a great opportunity for students who wanted to take part to learn how to be more sustainable and be involved in something they are passionate about,” Ms Potter said.

One of the projects coming up is being involved in designing and planting trees for the fauna bridge for NorthLink once it is built.

Year 10 student and Eco Warrior Jessica Bielby said she decided to volunteer because she loved animals and the environment.
