Lisa ThomasThe Advocate

UPPER Swan resident Portia Miller is smashing goals in hockey, with her eyes set on making the Hockeyroos squad.

The 13-year-old has already represented WA in the U12 state team and is currently in the selection mix for the U13 team, plus she was accepted into the hockey academy at Como Secondary College this year.

Portia said her love of hockey ran in her blood, with her family having a keen interest.

“My whole family has always played hockey, so I grew up around the sport,” she said.

“I started playing in a team when I was eight and I have loved playing it ever since.

“I love how fast and action-packed it is. I have played every position, so I am always trying to think of new ways to beat other players.”

She said the experience of travelling to Cairns with the U12 state team last year was exciting.

“The experience of travelling with the team and meeting new friends is something I will always remember,” she said.

Portia’s current goal is to secure her place in the U13 state team.

“In the long run, I would like to represent my state as much as I can, and hopefully one day my country by playing in the Hockeyroos.”

She said she looked up to former Perth hockey player Jamie Dwyer, who was now playing for Queensland.

“He has been voted the world’s best player five times and has played over 350 games for his country,” she said

“I have been coached by him in a clinic and I have watched some of his games – he has scored some of the most amazing goals I have seen.”

Portia has been nominated for the Junior Sports Star Individual award in the Community Newspaper Group’s Local Sports Star Awards.
