Artists get taste of china

Eleven members of the Watercolour Society of WA spent 10 days in Ann Hui Province, where their paintings were exhibited in the City of Huangshan Art Gallery.

President Susan Payne said art collectors bought some of their pieces, and the trip helped build a relationship between Perth and China.

"During the trip, which was organised by Sophia Tang-Baker, the artists were shown much of what the region has to offer including tea plantations, ink-stone making factories, wood and bamboo carving, ancient cities and buildings," she said.

The Mariginiup resident said the sightseeing culminated in a day trip to the Yellow Mountain region, which has inspired Chinese watercolourists for hundreds of years, and have now done the same for the WA artists.

"Another visit was to Jingdezhen, China's porcelain capital, which has been operational since before the famous Ming dynasty," she said. Other artists on the trip included Ashby's Hettie Rowley, Penny Maddison, Jan Pittman, Sue Moss, Lucy Papalia, Jude Scott, Stephanie Boyle, Beni Wright, Meredith Scull and Ana Nail.
