Girrawheen Lions Club’s popular swap meet finds new home at Kingsway Shopping Centre in Madeley on a trial basis

GIRRAWHEEN Lions Club is hosting its first swap meet in Madeley this weekend after being forced to relocate from Girrawheen.

Newpark Holdings, which runs Newpark Shopping Centre, requested the club cease its Saturday market in June after 30 years at the venue because of parking issues.

Since then, it has been desperately trying to secure a location and has been offered a two-month trial at Kingsway City shopping centre.

Treasurer Brian Anderson said they had exhausted all avenues within Girrawheen and approached City of Wanneroo councillor Hugh Nguyen to help liaise with Kingsway centre management.

“It’s been pretty challenging, we’ve tried numerous locations,” he said.

“It is a big relief, we’re there just for the trial period and hopefully it will work out.”

The swap meet generated most of the club’s income, which is then used to help the local community.

“We just want people to come down and support us, and by supporting us they’re supporting the community,” Mr Anderson said.

He also hoped many of their previous stallholders would return.

Cr Nguyen said the market had become an iconic activity in Girrawheen and hoped it would continue.

“I want to thank the Kingsway shopping centre management team for their tremendous generosity and support, and I call on our local community to once again come and support the swap mart,” he said.

The swap meet runs on Saturday from 7.30am to 11am at the centre’s grassed area on Hepburn Avenue, next to the car park.
