State artists fly the flag in Italy

The Watercolour Society of WA members received a second invitation to attend the annual event, called Ecco Acquerrelli, from their Italian counterparts after members participated in last year’s event.

‘Last year, five paintings were sent to their exhibition in Bellagio on Lake Como, where the vibrant colours of the WA landscape depicted in most of the paintings drew many favourable comments from the Italians and eight other participating countries,’ president Susan Payne said.

The Mariginiup artist and six of her peers, including Wanneroo artist Lorraine Gardner, will fly out on September 13 to represent Australia in the competition, which will run from September 21 to October 21.

They have sent 11 pieces to Maccagno on Lake Maggiore for judging, including pieces by Penny Maddison (Kalamunda), Ella Fagence (East Perth), Ray Eastwood (Cottesloe), Derrick Fitzpatrick (South Fremantle) and Beni Wright (Shenton Park).

They will attend workshops, paint ‘en plein air’ and hope to bring back work to exhibit in their own annual awards exhibition at the Italian Club in Fremantle, from October 11 to 13.
