Wanneroo and Districts Historical Society gets funding to host state conference

Laura PondWanneroo Times

A WANNEROO historical group has received City of Wanneroo funding to host a State conference in September.

The Wanneroo and Districts Historical Society applied for a full waiver of the fee of $1560 to hold the Annual Royal Western Australian History Conference of Affiliated Societies at Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre on September 8 and 9.

A report presented by the City at the June council meeting recommended refusing the application in line with its policy because an entry fee to the event would be charged, only 50 per cent should be waived and groups were limited to one application per financial year.

It said registration to the conference cost $85 in advance or $95, which would generate about $9000, and the society had already been granted $1600 for the official opening.

The group will contribute $1000 plus 50 hours of volunteer time to the conference.

Councillor Dot Newton declared an impartiality interest in the item at the meeting, as she is a member of the society and moved an amendment to approve the donation.

“The event will showcase the City of Wanneroo and its history across WA,” she said.

“I’m sure the cultural centre staff if consulted would agree as the members of the society have shared many hours of expertise (and) research into projects.”

Cr Linda Aitken agreed and believed hosting the conference would be a “feather in the cap” of the City.

The amended motion was supported unanimously by councillors.
