After caring for a loved one with bi-polar disorder and depression for more than 15 years, the Carramar resident wanted to escape to ‘find peace’.

Instead, he turned that need to run away into a reason to help others dealing with the effects of depression and raise $10,000 for the Black Dog Institute.

Mr Smith said the not-for-profit organisation helped him when his partner of 20 years was suddenly ‘not the same person anymore’.
