‘Frustrating’ lights must be changed

OVER the last two years, I have asked the Wanneroo City Council if there is any chance of improving the traffic control lights at Hastings St/Conlan Ave and Wanneroo Road.

The council advised that there was an agreement in existence between the council and the developer of the shopping complex for them to be responsible.

I can’t be the only one who finds these lights frustrating.

The amount of vehicles using these lights from all around the area to enter (or cross) Wanneroo Road, because of the difficulty of turning right into Wanneroo Road from other streets on the lake side of Wanneroo Road, makes this a very busy area.

If there was at least a right-turning arrow to direct vehicles from the right-hand lane leaving Conlan Avenue and heading north, the many vehicles hoping to turn south into Wanneroo Road from Hastings Street might have a better chance of getting through without waiting for the second cycle of lights.

Often I have seen vehicles turning right heading south, thinking they are cleared because there is no vehicle in the left lane, only to see some impatient driver whizz out from behind the right-turners because he just wants to go straight across.

This makes it very risky for the Hastings Street right-turners to take any action until the whole of Conlan Avenue has cleared, by which time we are lucky if three of us get around before they change.

This ‘right-turn only’ lane works well in Karrinyup where the centre exit crosses Karrinyup Road into Jeanes Road ” there is no risk of drivers being in the wrong lane, changing lanes and creating havoc.

It works smoothly, despite the amount of traffic using those lights. It’s about time the developers fronted up to their part of the agreement, making it a much safer area to shop.

Come on, all you local shoppers, please either write, email or telephone and make your views known to the council.

They might feel more inclined to put pressure on the developer if there were more complaints instead of just mine.
