Development players provide vital element

It allows them to showcase their talents and hopefully gives them court time to prove they can be a player in the National Basketball League.

Coming from the development player system, I have experienced this first hand.

The role of the development player, or ‘DP’, is integral in the make up of our team.

Their job is to challenge the contracted players to make them better as we strive towards winning a championship.

As well as challenging their more experienced teammates, the DPs are also required to learn opposition’s systems efficiently so we are prepared come game time.

Besides team promotion and school clinics, a development player has all the commitments of a regular squad member.

Weight sessions are mandatory and all members of the development squad must abide by requirements in terms of skinfolds, nutrition and recovery protocol.

Sometimes this role is undervalued, but the DPs are extremely important in making us better.

Current development players Ben Purser, Gavin Field and Michael Vigor have all shown glimpses of what they can achieve.
