Sheryl Fletcher’s daughter Rebecca was walking the 11-year-old dog at 9am on Sunday when without warning a larger dog ran out of a nearby property and savagely attacked the small shihtzu.

Cassie is now at Malibu Veterinarian Clinic fighting for life.

Mrs Fletcher said the vet clinic, along with Waves Vets in Success, had done an amazing job keeping Cassie alive.

‘So far she has had two operations and they don’t know if she will need another yet,’ she said.

‘These past few days have been a waiting game to see how she is.’

The family has forked out several thousand dollars in veterinarian bills with more likely to come.

On Wednesday, Cassie was being fed by a tube and was undergoing a CT scan to check for neurological damage but thankfully was able to breathe without an oxygen mask.

Mrs Fletcher said the incident was reported to City of Rockingham rangers and that Rebecca believed the dog that attacked Cassie was a pitbull.

Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said the matter was under investigation and two dogs at the Beermullah Way property were registered with the City.

‘The breed of dog is registered as an american staffordshire terrier,’ he said.

‘Once the investigation has been completed we will be able to decide what action will need to be taken.’

Mrs Fletcher said she wanted to thank the people who helped her daughter and Cassie after the attack, rushing the dog to the local vet.

‘My dogs will never be going for a walk again and if we do take them, we will be armed with a baseball bat,’ she said.
