Sloan’s Cottage was built in 1911 on Sloan Reserve in Leda and narrowly avoided being knocked down in 1973 after it was badly vandalised.
Cr Walter Prockter was instrumental in the successful fight to rebuild it using a $300,000 grant obtained in 1976.
Kwinana Heritage Group vice-president John Richardson said a gang of ‘hooligans’ had broken into the heritage site on the weekend and rampaged through the home.
‘Vandals smashed the door in, got inside and just smashed everything,’ he said.
Furniture and fridges have been turned upside-down, crockery used by the heritage organisation to offer cups of tea and cater for events have been smashed and even the home’s kitchen sink has been significantly damaged.
Volunteers salvaged what they could on Thursday while they wait for insurance to pay out for repairs and replacement items.
‘We do this so that the public can go and visit whenever they require to, so when idiots trash the place as has just happened it hurts us oldies heaps,’ Mr Richardson said.
