Rockingham: capture of undersized crabs nets man fine

Gabrielle JefferyWeekend Kwinana Courier

Guofeng Yu pleaded guilty in his absence to possession of a totally protected fish at Rockingham Magistrates Court on April 24.

The Fisheries Prosecutor said Yu was caught after Fisheries set a roadside check in Karnup on December 17 last year.

He said Yu’s car was stopped about 10.30pm and there were three people in the car. There were three buckets in the back of the car with a total of 50 crabs between them.

Of those, 44 were undersized.

They told officers they only measured some of the crabs and their main goal was to catch fish but as crabs came past, they caught them too.

For each undersize crab, there is a fine of $50 along with any other penalty or fine for the offence.

Magistrate Gregory Smith fined Yu $1000 plus $2100 for the undersized crabs.
