THE Rockingham Peel Group (RkPG) Mental Health Service has received a WA Mental Health Award for its commitment to family-centred care, coinciding with its 25th anniversary.

Presented by the WA Association for Mental Health, the awards celebrate those who have made an outstanding contribution to mental health in WA.

Service co-director Anthony Collier said the achievement recognised his team’s commitment to providing accessible and collaborative community-based services.

“We are focused on providing care to people in their own environments in a way that involves their families, carers and other support services,” he said.

“This achievement is a testament to our staff and the dedicated work they do day in, day out, to support people with mental illness.”

The service had its humble beginnings in 1992 when a two-person outreach service – consisting of a psychiatrist and a nurse – began visiting from Fremantle Hospital.

Today, RkPG provides mental health services for around 1100 people in the Rockingham, Kwinana, Mandurah, Murray and Waroona communities.

The team delivers a diverse range of services including mental health assessment, treatment, care planning, education, support for families and carers, and rehabilitation.

“Mental health continues to be a growing issue and it’s important we’re doing everything we can at a community level to help people stay well,” Mr Collier said.
