MORE than 300 Rockingham Senior High School students notched up a combined distance of 7500km when they took part in the school’s fifth annual try-athon to raise funds for Telethon.

The event, co-ordinated by teacher Isaac Thomas, included students from all years enrolled in the school’s specialist programs rugby league, netball, basketball, maritime and student leaders.

Another 80 students helped staff record the participants’ efforts as they completed each 100 metre lap on the school’s oval.

Mr Thomas said the school was aiming to raise $25,000 for Telethon and to improve its health and physical education facilities.

“With the help of amazing local businesses and communities, the school has raised more than $75,000 for Telethon over the past four years,” he said.

“Hopefully this year we can bring the grand total raised for the charity organisation to over $100,000 to help make lives for sick kids in WA a little bit better.”

The event was cut short due to inclement weather but Mr Thomas said the students would have walked more than 10,000km in six hours.

“On a day with very poor wet weather the students were amazing,” he said.

“They worked really hard to complete as many laps as possible before the call was made to end the event due at the 4.5 hour mark due to inclement storms approaching.

“This effort led to many completing over 300 laps (30km) within that time frame.”

Mr Isaac said the school was on target to smash its previous fundraising records and with many students already having more than $300 pledged to them so far.
