Power Dating Yoga a flexible twist on an old game

Rosanna CandlerWestern Suburbs Weekly

YOGA instructor Tanaya Ti-en had outgrown the bar pick-up scene and lost interest in internet dating when she realised the ideal way to meet a man was right under her nose.

“I wanted to draw in the kind of man who would be open to doing yoga, someone I could engage in a deep and meaningful conversation with, who is generally open-minded and enjoys being physically fit,” she said.

“In a yoga class it’s very internal; you rarely get to chat to people.

“So I thought: ‘We need to have a class where people are engaging with each other somehow’. Then it came to me: ‘My god, dating yoga’. I did some research and there was nothing else in Australia like it.”

Ti’en will run Power Dating Yoga (PDY) classes on February 12 from 6pm and February 14 from 3pm at Goodlife Subiaco Platinum for WA singles to find love in time for Valentine’s Day.

She said the first PDY class last December resulted in a 40 per cent success rate.

“Two weeks later one couple was jetting off to Bali together and they’re in a full-on relationship now,” she said.

“The ladies are loving it, but I think the men might be a little intimidated because they have it in their minds that you have to have done yoga before.

“These sessions are not about those crazy poses. If you can breathe, you can do yoga.”

Ti’en said yoga poses helped break down the boundaries that people often experienced in dating.

“It cuts through a lot of time wasting because you speak more authentically when you are warmed up and loose,” she said.

“I want people who come to this event to have 90 minutes or two hours of absolute freedom where they feel they can express who they are with complete strangers – and hopefully get a few phone numbers at the end of it.”
