Rugby: Associates, Soaks to fight it out for 2017 Premiership title

Associates and Wests Scarborough will fight it out for the 2017 Premier Grade title on Sunday after thrilling semi-final wins over the weekend.

Associates sparked one of the biggest upsets of the season on Saturday afternoon, taking down premiership favourites and minor premiers Palmyra 21-20 in a nail biting clash at The Foreshore.

Koniseti Kaufonoaga and Brendan Owen were the heroes for Associates with Kaufonoaga coming off the bench to score two tries in the final 10 minutes to bring Soaks back within one point after trailing 20-7.

Future Force Foundation fullback Brendan Owen then stepped up for Soaks and kept a cool head to knock over the conversion and secure a thrilling 21-20 victory.

The win takes the Swanbourne club back to the grand final for the first time since they took out the premiership in 2012.

Reigning premiers Wests Scarborough kept their back-to-back premiership hopes alive with a 32-29 victory over Nedlands thanks to penalty off the boot of Walter Koteka on the final play of the match.

Wests led for the vast majority of the contest and looked to be in control leading 17-5 at the half time break.

Determined to fight back, Nedlands rallied to claim the lead for the first time in the match with just 10 minutes to play, but a try and conversion for Walter Koteka levelled the scores with less than five minutes to play.

With time ticking down a high tackle penalty handed Koteka chance to kick his side into the grand final and the No.10 made no mistake slotting a tough kick into a strong breeze sparking pandemonium at Bennett Park.

Wests Scarborough and Associates will do battle for the right to call themselves 2017 Premier Grade Premiers at Tompkins Park, Applecross kicking off at 3.30pm.
