Rugby union: Nedlands under-15 girls hope to play in international tournaments

Kristie LimWestern Suburbs Weekly

A NEDLANDS Rugby Union Football Club team is hoping to play at international tournaments in Zurich and Hong Kong next year.

The under-15 girls rugby sevens team has won every rugby seven’s event on the RugbyWA calendar including the inaugural under-14s junior girls rugby seven’s RugbyWA premiership, the Southern Lions juniors tournament, the RugbyWA girls seven’s invitational and the RugbyWA Tour to Tokyo.

Coach Alan McFillin said the team was in RugbyWA finals action at the moment but was looking to find more sponsors for the Zurich All Girls Under-16s Rugby Seven’s tournament in 2018.

“This tournament has been running for over 10 years and is held a week before the Hong Kong Sevens rugby,” he said.

“We hope if we are lucky enough to attract sponsorship, that the girls can measure themselves against junior girls from around the world in an international competition.

“After the RugbyWA season has finished win, lose or draw; the girls will rest for a month, then come back into training in October, which will run through to a Christmas break.”

McFillin said he was “blessed” to have a team from different backgrounds and cultures who have been playing a full-contact sport together.

“These girls have earned themselves an opportunity to test themselves on the international stage and represent their club, state and country they live in as ambassadors of the sport,” he said.

“I have all the faith in the world they will do very well.”

McFillin said the girls had the talent to play for the Aussie Pearls team at the Olympic Games in the future.
