THE Shire of Northam has become one of seven local governments to win a Healthier Workplace WA Gold Award.

Shire chief executive Jason Whiteaker said its employees’ physical and mental health was “a key element of our organisation’s success”.

Since starting the Healthier Workplace program three years ago, staff turnover had reduced from 37 per cent to 15, with absenteeism also dramatically reducing.

“There has been a visible, positive change in workplace culture and this program has been a significant catalyst,” Shire human resources co-ordinator Bev Jones said.
