The 23-year-old, of Swan View, represented his local bakery Bakers Delight in the six-strand plait and white loaf sections.

Franchise owner Nathan Merrett said the judging criteria changed this year and there were few gold winners for the entire show.

“Shane has worked with us for just over three years and is on track with his apprenticeship,” Mr Merrett said.

The Swan View bakery took home nine silvers and five bronze awards in the bread and cake ranges.

Chief bread category judge John Noonan scrutinised everything from Italian-style bread to french sticks and gluten-free, along with a new brioche class.

In the pastry section, the tempting treats included torte, cheesecake, vanilla slices, gourmet pies and the new categories of quiche, Scottish shortbread and brownies.

Melting moments and Anzac biscuits were other new additions to the apprentice classes.

The Perth Royal Show is on from September 24 to October 1.
