York landfill site application knocked back again

RESIDENTS welcomed a planning decision to refuse a building extension for a rubbish dump at Allawuna Farm in York.

AVON Valley Residents Association spokesman Keith Schekkerman said the application was rejected unanimously by a Mid-West Wheatbelt Joint Development Panel (JDAP).

“A host of reasons were given for the refusal, but the main one was that changes to the York Town Plan now makes landfill a prohibited use,” he said.

Planning Minister Rita Saffioti recently banned landfill within the Shire of York.

A gathering of more than 200 residents applauded the decision after the vote was taken at the April 10 meeting.

Mr Schekkerman said he hoped the strong reasons given at the JDAP would influence any future decision should the applicants choose to appeal to a State Administrative Tribunal.
