Communicare’s Family Day Care service, based in Cannington and Joondalup, helped the newly retired Ms Candeloro become an educator of such popularity she won the Communicare Educator of the Year Award two years ago.

Ms Candeloro said she embarked on a career in childcare after realising how much she enjoyed babysitting for family and friends. Communicare had given her chances to interact and share ideas with other educators as she watched her charges grow.

‘A lot of the children don’t want to leave my house when their parents come to pick them up,’ she said.

‘One of my parents came to ask for a place before she got pregnant, because her husband said she couldn’t have another baby if I |couldn’t look after it.’

Ms Candeloro said she would miss the job, but her body was slowing down and it could be unfair on children to continue.

She did not intend to turn her back on caring altogether, however, saying she hoped to become an emergency foster carer.
