CONTRUCTION of 46 apartments on the former Canning aquatic centre site in Bentley will begin later this year, says the City of Canning.
A City spokesman said the development by Sunshine Development Pty Ltd was part of the Bentley regeneration project.
Councillor Jesse Jacobs said the development was split into two stages with the first stage on the 1.8ha aquatic centre site involving construction of a three-storey apartment complex valued at $9 million.
“The City has demolished the swimming pool and is levelling the site at the moment,” Cr Jacobs said.
He said construction of the first stage was due to start soon and would take about 18 months to complete.
The development will include one-bedroom, two-bedroom and studio apartments, with prices starting at $237,000.
Cr Jacobs said the second stage involved the construction of 400 apartments in a nine-storey complex.
There are plans to relocate the Bentley Library into the second stage complex once completed, he said.
A City spokesman said chief executive Arthur Kyron and other City officers recently met State Treasurer Ben Wyatt to discuss the progress of Canning’s works in the area.
“The Treasurer was supportive of the City’s plans to develop the former Canning aquatic centre and the structure plan that guides development in the area,” the spokesman said.
