THE Salvation Army is calling on residents to support the 2016 Red Shield Doorknock appeal so they can continue to help more than 100,000 people in need for another year.
The Bentley Salvation Army branch has recorded a 50 per cent increase in demand for food from the public since this time last year, according to emergency relief manager John Angus, who passes out food and food vouchers to the needy.
Branch Major Sharon Watson said people were struggling in the area, after job losses, homelessness and mental health issues had begun to take their toll.

READ NOW“People are struggling across the board and living week-to-week,” she said. “But we can support people through programs like drug and alcohol rehab, homelessness and women’s shelters.”
May and June are a critical time for the Salvos, who annually seek to raise 2.1 million dollars to keep their services running.
“We encourage everyone to dig deep, every little bit helps whether you can contribute financially or by volunteering your time please help us share the load and think of others,” Major Watson said.
