WITH her gran by her side, Orana Primary School Student Mikayala Richardson (11) was named the Best Kid at the 2016 Big Bethanie Bake Off .

Plating up a Melanzane Con Salsa, a luxurious Italian dish with eggplant, tomato and cheese, Mikayala and grandmother Christine Scali were just doing what makes them happy – cooking with someone they love.

Held at Burswood Park as part of Have a Go Day, the competition aimed to close the intergenerational gap between our seniors and young people.

Mikayla was one of four finalists from each of the seniors and under-18 categories to cook their favourite family recipe, accompanied by a story reflecting their family’s life, culture and history.
