Canning City Lions help raise funds for trike for boy in need

DEDICATED fundraisers from the Lion’s Club of Canning City sold sizzling sausages, collected newspapers and stood at the gate of the Canning Show to raise enough money to custom build a tricycle for a boy with Down syndrome.

Boosted by an Australian Lion’s Club grant, the Canning-based Lions bequeathed a custom-made, adjustable tricycle for Harrisdale youngster Matthew Guppy (10).

Lion’s member Mary Gregory said she was thrilled to hand over the trike to Matthew, who had difficultly balancing on a bicycle with training wheels.

“We jumped at the chance to help Matthew and his family and it’s been good to see him with his new trike,” she said.

The tricycle features a control attachment for Matthew’s mother to steer him and will adjust as he grows to ensure he can ride long into the future.

“Now Matthew can go for a ride with his parents and the rest of his family,” Ms Gregory said.

The donation was part of the service-driven clubs altruistic purpose to provide needed items to people in the immediate community.
