The City provides a 24-hour security service, which will be improved with the creation of a contact centre where residents will be able to speak to an operator 24 hours a day.
Commissioner Linton Reynolds said the security charge had been incorporated into the rates in previous years.
‘This year, to ensure transparency and to benchmark our security service against other local governments, we have decided to detail the charge separately on your rates notice,’ he said.
Mr Reynolds said the charge would assist the City as it moves towards council amalgamations in July 2015.
‘Ahead of the reform, we decided it was in the best interest of the community that they receive as much information as possible on the cost of security service,’ he said.
‘The City of Gosnells, Town of Victoria Park and City of South Perth do not currently provide a security service, and the City of Melville charges $51.20 per year,’ Mr Reynolds said.
‘In preparation for the changes in 2015, we want as much transparency as possible across all the costs for our residents.’
