City of Canning finds asbestos at child care facility

Pia van StraalenCanning Gazette

CITY of Canning has identified asbestos underneath the linoleum floor covering in a council-owned building, located on the corner of Ferndale and Bursaria crescents in Ferndale.

A specialist contractor found the asbestos was in-situ, which means it has not been damaged and is of minimal risk.

However, the City is taking the precautionary measure to close the building and immediately remove and replace all of this flooring.

The building is currently leased to the Lynwood/Ferndale Playgroup, which has been supportive of the City’s quick action.

Chief executive Arthur Kyron said the City had been proactive and would remove and replace the floor immediately.

“We anticipate the building will be closed for approximately two to four weeks while the material is removed, the facility cleaned, and the new flooring installed,” he said.

The Parkwood Playgroup has offered to share their playgroup and facility until the works are complete.

“The Parkwood Playgroup has been incredibly supportive in sharing their space and we thank them for their generosity; this is a true example of community spirit,” Mr Kyron said.
