AN innovative and effective strategy to tackle weeds on City of Canning sporting fields has resulted in four years without the use of herbicides.

The handiwork of park supervisor Paul Wright, the program implements his expertise, gained after achieving a master’s degree in turf management.

The City’s is a leader in the strategy, which involves nurturing sustainable and optimum turf health so the turf creates a strong growth barrier that outcompetes any weeds.

The City manages soil nutrient levels on its grounds by in-house soil testing.

The testing helps to create targeted and efficient water-soluble nutrient mixes for each ground, which helps to establish strong and weed resistant turf.

The management technique reduces impact on the environment by reducing the nutrient run off into waterways.
