City of Canning’s Reconciliation Week events extends knowledge of Indigenous culture

Pia van StraalenCanning Gazette

AS part of the City of Canning’s Reconciliation Week events, Nyoongar woman Sharon Gregory held language lessons at Riverton Library.

The classes were organised as part of a week of events, which included the Makuru Festival and a Cultural Walk and Talk event with Nyoongar educator Leonard Thorn.

Students from different backgrounds and all ages came to enjoy the four-week course, that centred around basic phrasing, short sentences and eventually creating simple storybooks.

Appetites were whet too, with a traditional bush tucker tasting opportunity.

Ms Gregory said the lessons were an opportunity for her to extend her knowledge of country to people in the community.

“I love to share my culture, and help others learn. It was great to see such a range of ages, ethnicities and personalities join this class and they were all so keen to participate, and we had a lot of fun too,” she said.
