NEW City of Canning commissioners recommended a 72-child daycare centre in Willetton be approved despite opposition from residents.

At last Tuesday’s agenda settlement briefing, it was decided the proposal met the City’s planning requirements.

The proposal is for a two-storey centre with 26 parking bays on a 1494sq m site at 1 Cameron Court and 43 Granville Way.

Residents were concerned about the size of the centre, and parking and entry points into the cul-de-sac.

The original application was for a 92-child centre, but Canning staff did not support the proposal.

The application was amended to 72 children, with 14 permanent staff, which the City accepted.

The proposal has been deferred several times.

Former Canning Commissioner Linton Reynolds deferred the item on the final evening of his tenure.

The three new commissioners deferred it again at a special council meeting last month.

The outcome will be decided at tonight’s council meeting.
