Club to reopen

The club surrendered the lease of the building back to the City of Canning after it became insolvent, affecting more than 5000 members.

Riverton MLA Mike Nahan said Premier Colin Barnett committed the $1 million grant to the club’s restoration, provided the council matched the funding and developed a practical plan for the building to serve the community’s needs.

A City of Canning spokesman said restoration work undertaken shortly after the club closed enabled existing sports clubs to keep using the building on a hire basis, and the building was presently suitable for limited use.

‘The City has funding on the current annual budget for the purpose of the Willetton Sports precinct project that can be used for the purpose of building refurbishment,’ he said.

‘Any proposal to undertake any major refurbishment or even a rebuild of the facility will be determined by the council following consideration.’
