Curtin comes down, redevelopment also lost

The high profile Bentley centres will go to Victoria Park/South Perth. The suburbs of Shelley, Rossmoyne and Willetton would join the expanded Fremantle/East Fremantle/Melville council.

Canning commissioner Linton Reynolds said the loss of the suburbs would not affect revenue.

‘Those suburbs going to Melville bring in approximately $6.7 m in revenue but the loss is basically cost neutral,’ he said. ‘But the Brownlie Towers redevelopment will take a lot of planning and resources over the next two years, and then we will have to hand it over to someone else.’

Mr Reynolds said Canning residents could expect a rate increase after the merger.

‘City of Canning rates are lower than any of the surrounding neighbours, so it seems inevitable that they will rise with amalgamation,’ he said.
