Ms Thompson is participating in Dry July, during which people give up drinking alcohol for the whole of July to raise funds for a cancer service. She has chosen the Cancer Council.
The 24-year-old started doing Dry July after she was moved by her cousin Chriss battle with cancer.
He died of the disease this month.
Ms Thompson first did Dry July in 2013 with a friend and raised about $1300.
This year, she and a team of eight others have already raised more than $2000.
I am very determined to do what I can for other families, she said.
And it is not as if giving up alcohol for a whole month is going to be easy for Ms Thompson and her friends.
I do really enjoy my wine, she said. We are all keen for a drink so it is not an easy task for us.
She said having a cousin with cancer had really opened her eyes to the disease.
Its basically like a living nightmare, she said.
Certain problems just do not really matter and it changes the way you view the world in a big way.
For me personally it was just horrible and if I can help prevent that or help someone else just a little bit, I would do it.
