POLICE are calling for witnesses to a fatal crash in Riverton over the weekend.

About 6am on Saturday, a silver Mercedes hatch crashed into a tree on Vahland Avenue, near Tribute Street, killing a 24 year old man.

The Rivervale man was rushed to Fiona Stanley under priority one but was unable to be saved.

He was the sole occupant in the car.

Witnesses said paramedics and fire crew had to cut the driver from the wreckage.

Vahland Avenue was closed in both directions for part of Saturday as police investigated the crash scene.

Just metres from the site, a white cross stands in the median strip, to remember three teenagers who lost their lives in a high speed crash on the same stretch of road in 2008.

Major Crash investigators would like to speak with anyone who saw the crash or the Mercedes prior to the crash.

Anyone with dashcam vision around the time of the crash are asked to contact crimestoppers.

Anyone with any information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report online at crimestopperswa.com.au
