AS organisations around the world celebrate International Volunteer’s Day on Tuesday, EdConnect Australia will be doing the same with a special local resident.

Ferndale’s Peter Harris has spent more than 15 years volunteering at Lynwood Senior High School, becoming one of the first volunteers in the EdConnect program at the school.

Lynwood SHS learning support co-ordinator Joyce Micheal said through his volunteer work Mr Harris had helped more than 60 students.

“Peter is a wonderful ‘grandfather’ figure for our students and they feel very comfortable to discuss a variety of topics with him,” she said.

“He is a great ambassador for the senior citizens and how they can remain active and involved in the community.

“He is a great source of general knowledge and has an amazing talent for poetry recitation.

“He is committed to justice and fairness and an opportunity for all to achieve their true potential which he demonstrates during his time with the students.”

EdConnect is looking for volunteers for the 2018 school year.
