Great-grandmother escapes from intruder

Carmelle WilkinsonCanning Gazette

A WILLETTON great-grandmother used her personal alarm to escape from an intruder during a terrifying home invasion.

The 93-year-old, who didn’t want to be named, said she was woken up by a man in her bedroom in the early hours of June 2.

“It was terrifying to be woken by a man going through my bedroom,” she said.

“I managed to escape through the front door and pressed my Silver Chain alarm to call for help.”

The personal alarm activated voice contact with Silver Chain’s emergency response operators who stayed on the phone with the great grandmother until police arrived.

Business manager Kiah Lee said Silver Chain Personal Alarms were important for people living alone in the community.

“A Silver Chain alarm allows people to live independently, giving them and their loved ones peace of mind knowing there is someone to answer calls for help, day or night,” she said.

The Silver Chain call centre received about 700 emergency calls last month.

Acting Sergeant Mick Slaughter said police were continuing their investigation.
