The gentle marsupial was found cowering in the burnt yard of a Cookernup home just five kilometres from the fire-ravaged town of Yarloop.
He arrived at the Riverton Rossmoyne Veterinary Hospital last Tuesday and was taken care of by animal carer Amy Croot, who took him for treatment as a representative of the Bunbury-based Emergency Wildlife Rescue.
Vet nurse Pip Walker said River had superficial burns on his feet, and a course of antibiotics and bandages ensured he would heal completely.
“He has his bandages redressed every day and is bottle fed every four hours.
“He is a sweet and gentle boy who loves cuddles and gratefully accepts the help,” she said.
River, who weighs 2.5kg is carried in a sling and will be introduced to other orphaned kangaroos once he is fully healed.
