Libraries have busy chapter

Riverton Library manager Judi Willmott said the Riverton, Bentley, Cannington and Willetton public libraries continued to be very well used.

Mrs Willmott said that even though the borrowing of physical items, including books, magazines and jigsaws had declined over recent years, library memberships continued to rise.

‘There could be several reasons for library memberships increasing and I would say that the population growth throughout the City of Canning could be one of the major reasons,’ she said.

‘Other factors could be the mini baby boom over the last few years, which has seen an increase in the child population. Also, the availability of technology in the libraries has attracted people who have never been interested in borrowing print materials.’

Technology and social media had an impact on how much children and teens read in print, especially for study because reference services in public libraries used to be very busy, but this had declined over the past five years.
