AUSTSWIM and the City of Canning have launched Make Aquatics a Terrific Experience (MATE) to promote wellness among people with disabilities or medical conditions.

MATE is an innovative program aimed at optimising health and wellness opportunities for people with medical conditions and disabilities, and helping them to enjoy the support and benefits of water by using local swimming pools with their family, friends or carers.

The program launched last Wednesday and included a seminar to provide participants with information, skills and confidence to take a person with a medical condition or disability to the pool for recreation.

Aquatic activity promotes a sense of well being, maximises body function and independence, improves mood and increases self-esteem. It also provides a great fitness opportunity for the club member and their mate.

Hosted at Riverton Leisureplex – a location specially designed to be accessible for people of all abilities – the programme is the third of its kind throughout Perth, and the first south of the river.

The cost is $3 per participant and for further information on joining the club, or attending the seminar, contact Julie Plummer on 9231 0921 or julie.plummer@canning.wa.gov.au.
