Man hit with further charges over crash that killed five-year-old

POLICE have charged a 34-year-old man with an additional 21 charges over a traffic crash in Wilson late last year that claimed the life of a five-year-old.

It is alleged that on Saturday December 29, the man was the driver of a stolen white Toyota Hilux utility that struck a Hyundai van stopped at a red light at the intersection of Leach Highway and Bungaree Road.

The Hyundai then struck the back of a semitrailer being towed by a Mercedes truck and became wedged under the trailer.

The eight occupants of the Hyundai, six adults and two children, received serious injuries.

One of those injured, a five-year-old child, has since died from injuries received in the crash.

The 34-year-old man has been further charged with five counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm with circumstances of aggravation, four counts of failing to report an incident occasioning death or grievous bodily harm and four counts of failing to ensure assistance was received after an incident occasioning grievous bodily harm.

He has also been charged with of dangerous driving occasioning death with circumstances of aggravation, dangerous driving occasioning bodily harm with circumstances of aggravation, failing to report an incident occasioning bodily harm and failure to ensure assistance was received after an incident occasioning bodily harm.

As well as the driving charges, the man was charged two counts of stealing, stealing a motor vehicle and having no authority to drive.

He is next due to appear in Perth Magistrates Court on February 21.
