More local schools to get Independent Public School status in 2017

Education Minister Peter Collier announced 73 public schools would attain independent status, bringing the total of independent schools in the state to 524.

More than 83 per cent of public students will attend an independent public school in 2017.

The minister said more than 100 schools had applied to join the initiative, and the standard was so high the initial cap of 50 schools was extended.

School staff and council members will be part of a transition program next term.

Local schools selected for 2017 were Cannington Community College, Parkwood Primary School, Riverton Education Support Centre, Riverton Primary School and Willetton Primary School.
