Mudder draws thousands

Staff ReporterCanning Gazette

Held at Challis Farm in Copley, Tough Mudder features a 20km endurance course designed by British Special Forces to test strength, mental grit, stamina and camaraderie.

With about 25 natural and man-made obstacles including mud pits and electroshock wires, it takes the average person about four hours to complete the course.

Tough Mudder Australian ambassador and former army man Lee Campbell said the course was about overcoming fears while having fun.

‘At Tough Mudder we want everyone to leave with a great experience and a great sense of fulfilment, having achieved and overcome some of the fears that normally you don’t face in day-to-day training or life,’ he said.

‘So whether that’s jumping off some heights and getting used to those sorts of things ” any little piece of enjoyment you can take away and getting involved with your mates and friends and just having a real good go.’

A team of four have been selected to take on the World’s Toughest Mudder in Las Vegas in November after a gruelling 25-hour challenge.

Darren Clarke, Deanna Blegg, Lachlan Dansie, Mick Crossley and reserve Luke Atkins make up the Under Armour’s Team Australia.

Melburnian Ms Blegg, who was in Perth to trial the course, said she had a running background and was excited to be the only woman to make the team.

‘We’re going for gold; we want to be the first team across and I think we all have that goal, so I think it will be great,’ she said.

‘I’m not sure what they have in store for us; we only have an idea of the itinerary.’
