CANNING Vale teenager Tiana Aitken landed her first amateur acting role as the lead character in the Stirling Players production of the musical Mulan JR.

Tiana (13) auditioned for the role in February and is now performing in the musical as the character Mulan – a girl who impersonates a man and joins the Chinese army.

The production, based on Disney’s 1998 Oscar-nominated film, opened on May 26 and runs at the Stirling Theatre in Innaloo until June 10.

Tiana said she was new to musical theatre and was enjoying being on stage with other cast members aged between 11 and 14.

“I like how you can express yourself on stage and it is fun as well,” she said.

“Mulan is a mischievous, curious character. She doesn’t want her dad to go to war, so she sacrifices her life to go to war to protect him.”

Tiana’s love of singing and theatre began at a young age

She attended Johnny Young Talent School in Riverton when she was four years old. Last year she obtained a high distinction in her grade 8 pianoforte exam with the Australian Music Examinations Board.
