Richmond Wellbeing in Cannington show support for LGBTIQ community

Ben SmithCanning Gazette

RICHMOND Wellbeing have literally nailed their colours to their mast to show their support for the LGBTIQ community.

The non-profit organisation are now permanently flying a rainbow flag outside their Cannington office to show its commitment and support for people who identify as LGBTIQ.

Chief executive officer Neil Guard said the mental health organisation would focus on better responding to the community’s specific needs.

“The research clearly shows poorer mental health outcomes for LGBTIQ communities are directly related to the psychological distress that can occur as a result of experiences of stigma, prejudice, discrimination, abuse and exclusion in relation to their identity, experience or history,” he said.

“Richmond Wellbeing has committed itself to providing a more LGBTIQ inclusive approach to address the heightened risk factors of poor mental health, including suicide.

“This is what all service providers and the community need to be striving for, not simply being satisfied with an absence of discrimination.”
